The manna from heaven

This biblical reference sprung to my mind one morning, last week. At the RER entrance, on the "parvis de La Défense", several smiling young ladies wearing a uniform and equipped with a wicker basket, were distributing sweets to hurried travelers. Success was of course there. When something is given for free… They had more success than their fellow colleagues, but friends nevertheless, who were distributing leaflets for a coming jazz festival.

So this morning was dedicated to a free distribution of muesli-made-of-complete-corn-and-chocolate-with-eight-vitamins-calcium-and-iron, made by a well known Swiss company and of a trade with a name that assures you with a hourglass figure. So you can eat chocolate and sugar and keep your clear conscience. In fact when you read attentively the list of ingredients, you will notice that you there is not only cereals and chocolate. Even if they don't go into the muesli, it is possible that you find tracks of peanuts, almonds and other nuts and eggs. How is it possible ? Did they forget to clean the mixer or the pot ?

Anyway it is a full success. Empty cardboard boxes are testifying of the fullness of the distribution. I can't help thinking about the publicity caravan that was coming prior to a well known cycle race, specially the one that last four and not three days. All the kids, and I was part of them, were begging for hats made of paper or for some sweets, the ultimate being able to get an insect spray advertising cap, thrown from a van on the roof of which was a huge dung fly.

On this particular morning, a man was also begging. He was sitting on the ground, ten meters away from the RER entrance. Between his folded legs was a piece of cardboard on which you could read a summary of his precarious situation and of his immediate need. Everyone knows one of them. The manna from heaven was for him. In front of the cardboard, loads of muesli, given by the travelers, with no manner, in the style of the Auvergnat. I don't know if one day it is possible to hear him sing, but I hope this has warmed his heart.
